Introduction
Caring for a loved one in hospice can bring unexpected challenges. Symptoms like pain, shortness of breath, or anxiety may appear suddenly, leaving families unsure of what to do next. At Ozark Hospice, we believe comfort should never have to wait. That’s why we provide every patient with a Comfort Kit—a small supply of essential medications kept safely in the home to bring immediate relief when guided by a hospice nurse or physician.
What Is a Comfort Kit?
A Comfort Kit, sometimes called a “comfort pack,” is delivered directly to your home when hospice care begins. It ensures that essential medications are on hand in case symptoms change outside of regular pharmacy hours.
The kit is stored safely in the refrigerator and remains sealed until a nurse or physician advises it’s time to open. Each kit is prepared specifically for the patient, with medications chosen to meet their individual needs.
These medications are only for the patient and should never be shared with others. With clear guidance from our care team, families can feel confident knowing they are prepared if a loved one’s condition changes unexpectedly.
During a GIP stay, patients receive:
- Acetaminophen suppository – For mild pain or fever
- Haloperidol (Haldol) liquid – For restlessness or confusion (as needed)
- Atropine drops – To manage excess secretions in the mouth or throat
- Lorazepam (Ativan) – For anxiety, restlessness, or trouble sleeping
- Morphine sulfate solution (Roxanol) – For pain or shortness of breath
Your Ozark Hospice nurse will explain what each medication is for, how to use it safely, and when to call for support.
When Might Respite Care Be Needed?
The Comfort Kit is more than a set of medications—it’s a source of peace of mind. Families tell us it helps them feel prepared, not helpless, when symptoms arise.
Benefits of the kit include:

Relief without delay
Symptoms can be addressed right away, even after hours.

Reduced stress
Caregivers know they have support and a plan in place.

Preserved dignity
Patients remain comfortable in their own surroundings.
During a respite stay, patients receive the same level of comfort, symptom management, and emotional support they would at home—just in a safe, supervised setting.
Safe Use & Ongoing Support
Comfort Kits should only be opened and used under direct instruction from your hospice nurse or physician. Our team will check the kit regularly, review instructions, and answer any questions so caregivers feel confident.
If you’re ever unsure about when or how to use the Comfort Kit, Ozark Hospice is just one call away—day or night.
